Abstract

A stable emotional state and balanced social behavior are characteristics of emotional intelligence. A person’s likeness or delight at work is referred to as job satisfaction. lecturers at universities must deal with people who are the most emotionally intelligence, thus both factors are crucial. Their balanced actions and contentment can lead to a balanced society. With regard to age, gender, job title, education level, and work experience of university lecturers, the study sought to explore the relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. The study’s population consisted of university lecturers in University of Lagos. 288 lecturers were chosen at random. To evaluate both the degree of emotional intelligence and job satisfaction, two instruments were utilized. Professors and those over 50 are found to be the most stable and content with their jobs, while associate professors and teachers between 46 and 50 are found to be the most unstable and unsatisfied with their jobs. It was advised that the university administration create the policies and address the demands of the staff.

Introduction

1.1Background of the study

The development of human resources is the most important component for the success, development, and attainment of goals in any business. Human resources in the education sector are dedicated, trustworthy, diligent, have a positive work environment, and are qualified personnel. The necessary conditions must be created in order to fulfill any institute’s objectives so that employees may do their assigned tasks in a supportive environment with inclination and satisfaction and with the necessary productivity to meet organizational objectives. Job satisfaction is a crucial component of the administrative environment and a crucial element in worker association. When a worker’s work appears to accomplish core occupational objectives and those values are placed in alignment with personal requirements, it creates an upbeat emotional condition (Jorfi, Yaccob, & Shah, 2011). Job satisfaction is a topic of extensive research in both academia and business. It is defined as a pleasant emotional mood resulting from an evaluation of one’s work or experience. A worker’s sentimental response to their work which is an outcome of the anticipated effect from their employment is the source of job happiness (Jorfi & Jorfi, 2011). The degree to which a person is proud of his work is a measure of job satisfaction.

Emotional intelligence is seen as a crucial factor that might impact people’s productivity and the quality of their job (Laila and Shehla, 2011). It is suggested that employing emotional intelligence is crucial, especially for “caring” professions like teaching (Brackett et al., 2010). Whether or not a lecturer is successful in their employment can be determined by their understanding, consideration, and ability to express emotions in the right manner (Ciarrochi et al., 2011). A lecturer is the key player in the educational system and is responsible for several significant tasks. They had to be dedicated to their careers and their personal lives if they wanted to pursue a career as teachers. Therefore, in order to increase their job happiness, instructors should be well-versed in emotional intelligence theory and practice. Conversely, if lecturers are content with their work, it may have an impact on their behavior and self-perception and foster positive relationships with the community, students, and other lecturers.

These days, being a teacher requires more than just technical proficiency; it also requires empathy and a grasp of human behavior. Employees who are conscious of their emotions may perform better at work. High emotional intelligence workers are more adept at controlling their own and others’ emotions (Farzana et al., 2012). Employees with low emotional intelligence are unable to comprehend their own interior moods, capture the feelings and opinions of others, or take an active interest in their difficulties. Employees who are unable to control their negative emotions and respond to abrupt changes would have weak behavior and attitude at work, according to Saddam (2010) (Saddam, 2010).

Additionally, a person with emotional intelligence is able to control their sentiments and emotions in a variety of spheres of their lives. Employees with high levels of job satisfaction and organizational commitment can control their emotions in the workplace better and report fewer psychological issues (Long and Tan, 2015). The apparent relationship between what employees perceive as offered and their level of job satisfaction can be viewed as either a positive or an emotional function (Buitendach and Rothman, 2009).

Statement of the problem

Today’s lecture performance entails more than just one’s abilities; it also involves understanding emotions and other people’s behaviors, whether they be students, coworkers, or communities. People who are conscious of their emotions may perform better at work. Employee performance is significantly influenced by emotional intelligence, especially for governmental employees like lecturers. Therefore, based on this background the researcher wants to investigate on emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of lecturers: the implication of relationship.

Objective of the study

The main objective of the study is to investigate emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of lecturers: the implication of relationship. The specific objectives of the study are;

Research Question

The following research questions are formulated to guide the study;

  1. Is there relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction among lecturers respect to age?
  2. Is there relationship between emotional Intelligence and job satisfaction among lecturers according to teaching experience?
  3. Is there relationship between emotional Intelligence and job satisfaction among lecturers’ respect to qualification?

Research Hypotheses

The following research hypotheses are formulated to guide the study;

H1: There is no relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction among lecturers

H2: There is no relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of male and female lecturers

Significance of the study

The emotional intelligence is psychological character needed by lecturers to cope with fellow lecturers. This study will be beneficial to students, lecturers and ministry of education. This study will help ministry of educate to organize seminar base on emotional intelligence to help them cope in their work places. The study will also serve as a reference to another researcher that will embark on the related topic

Scope of the study

The scope of the study covers emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of lecturers: the implication of relationship. The study will be limited lecturers in University of Lagos state

Limitation of the study

  1. Non-availability of enough resources (finance): A work of this nature is very tasking financially, money had to be spent at various stages of the research such resources which may aid proper carrying out of the study were not adequately available.
  2. Time factor: The time used in carrying out the research work is relatively not enough to bring the best information out of it. However, I hope that the little that is contained in this study will go a long way in solving many greater problems.

Definition of terms

Emotional intelligence: The capacity to recognize, use, and regulate your own emotions in order to reduce stress, communicate clearly, sympathize with others, overcome obstacles, and diffuse conflict is known as emotional intelligence (EQ).

Job satisfaction: The degree of enjoyment employees experience with their jobs is known as job satisfaction. Beyond their regular responsibilities, this includes their relationship with coworkers and bosses, their opinion of the organization’s rules, and the effect their work has on their personal lives.

Relationship: An emotional or other connection between people.
