Abstract

This study was on computer awareness and academic attainment of secondary School students in Kaura Local Government Area in Kaduna State. Three objectives were raised which included: To find out the computer awareness level among secondary school students, to find out the extent to which secondary school students do operate computer and to find out the percentage of secondary school students that have the knowledge of power point. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected secondary schools in Kaura local government area in Kaduna state Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1Background of the study

Computer literacy refers to a teacher’s understanding of and skill with computers and other associated technology on a variety of levels. It may also be described as the ease with which a person feels when using software for computers and other devices, such as Applications include Microsoft Word, database management, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Computer literacy was described by Adio (2003) as the capacity of a computer user to use the computer system and its add-ons to address a specific issue. According to Onasanya (2001), as the globe enters the third millennium, it would be difficult to update the way that people learn and teach, stay up with technology advancements, and implement computer literacy in the Nigerian educational system.

Because computers have been shown to make all recognizable activities simpler, their use is now felt in every field of human activity. In many nations, using computers in classrooms in some capacity has grown fairly fashionable (Haruun 2005) The computerization of technical training operations in industrialized countries can be emulated in developing countries, especially Nigeria, however such an ambition can scarcely be fulfilled without a sizable pool of native trainers with the necessary computer literacy.

According to John Iloanusi’s (2008) contribution, computers are useful for keeping data on crimes, offenders, and suspects. He claimed that both crime prevention and detection may benefit greatly from it. Such a system is compatible with photo-taking and fingerprint systems. According to Okorie (2008), using a computer reduces data to a very minimal storage area. Information retrieval and storage are expedited, and computer records can simply be updated when necessary.

Today, students in our country are denied the much wanted opportunities for multi-media learning due to a dearth of computer science education facilities and a population that is largely computer illiterate (Akudolu, 2001). She believed that introducing computer studies into the classroom would equip students with the tools necessary for both academic success and personal fulfillment. Lawal (2000) claimed that integrating computer education into teacher education programs will better educate instructors to use computer-driven tactics and facilities to enhance classroom instruction while preparing them for real-world classroom situations.

When it comes to retraining employees to fit into jobs, offering entrepreneurial skill and development programs, and empowering individuals with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable them to engage in productive work for the rest of their lives, computer science education plays an important role. It also makes quality job abilities and skills accessible, which is important for securing secure employment. Also understanding the

The National Policy on Computer Education, a major branch of which is the National Computer Education Curriculum, has been released by the Federal Government as part of its effort to address the importance of computer literacy.

The usage of computers is just beginning to spread in Nigeria. Nigerians are growing more computer savvy and are becoming aware of the immense advantages it provides.

As the nation grows, computers are the newest, according to Adekunle Adegbaje (2000). It has become widely accepted throughout the economy. It is becoming more and more well-liked, and this will continue.

Some persons experience such severe episodes of network neurosis, terminal panic, or computer shock that they refrain from using computerized learning methods (Shineiderman, 2000). The reason why the target audience for computers in the past has mistrusted and been afraid of computer technology was proposed by Bertino (2005). He claimed that the interfaces were confusing, unclear, and scary, which caused pupils to feel irritated, uneasy, and even scared.

Statement of the problem

The explosion of computer applications has completely transformed the world into the “computer age” and turned the entire planet into a global village. Today, the use of computers and software has had a significant impact on many aspects of human activity, including education, health care, the military, politics, agriculture, religion, and commerce. This implies that computer literacy is a basic requirement for anyone (students or any cooperative body) to function effectively and efficiently in any field of human endeavor today, especially for science teachers and students to properly deliver in different field of specialization in the current computer age.

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To find out the computer awareness level among secondary school students.
  •  To find out the extent to which secondary school students do operate computer.
  • To find out the percentage of secondary school students that have the knowledge of power point.

Research Hypotheses

H1: there is no computer awareness level among secondary school students.

H2: there is no extent to which secondary school students do operate computer.

Significance of the study

The significance of this study is as follows: To students, in our educational institutions today the work of computer cannot be overemphasized. Having known the importance of computer and their level of awareness in computer from this project work, it will give them courage and strength to study computer with full interest. The students will equally use this work to develop their own work in writing their own project. To parents, today a lot of things could be done with computer. Thus project will help the parents to know the necessity of computer awareness in our society and can motivate them to give their children full support in acquiring the knowledge of computer. This can also make them to buy computer text and pay for where they are learning computer. Fundamentally, the study would serve as a reference material for further studies in the application of computer to teaching and learning. Especially in science and technology, educational software developers could mass produce Computer Assisted Basic Technology Package for use by Secondary Schools, Teachers and Students to enhance the level of awareness of computer in teaching and learning of Basic Technology in secondary schools.

Scope of the study

The scope of the study covers computer awareness and academic attainment of secondary School students. The study will be limited to Kaura Local Government Area in Kaduna State

Limitation of the study

The limitations encountered by the project researchers are emphasized below:

  • Finance: funds had been the major problem encountered by the project researcher, because, raising funds is a pre-requisite task.
  • Time: the inevitable progression into the future with the passing of present event into the past is known as Time. Therefore, time had been one of the major limitations encountered by the investigators of the study.

Gathering Information: before researcher can conduct a research, information must be gathered accurately
